"Pet goat politics" versus take the high road politics

Thu Aug 14, 2008 at 06:37:03 PM PDT

We all will never forget Bush reading The Pet Goat while all hell was breaking loose on September 11th.  How could anyone forget that day?Since then we have been diluged with 'Pet Goat' moments from this administration.Over and over again we have seen Bush both figuratively and literally absent himself from any crisis in this country. He is there in body most times but he continues to leave us, as a collective, in the lurch both figuratively and literally on all levels. Here comes a breath of fresh air.  His name is Barack Obama and he practices high road politics.Jump...

Train Wreck Alert:  Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi opening convention.

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 04:46:18 PM PDT

Do we WANT to drive voters away from Barack Obama?  On the opening night of the historic Democratic convention, organizers put two of the most divisive and unpopular figures in Democratic politics on the agenda as featured turnoffs speakers.

Democrats Work, delegates, Michelle Obama, and the Dem Convention

Sun Aug 10, 2008 at 11:25:04 AM PDT

This week I got to interview Erin Egan from Democrats Work.
Erin provides a good background on what Democrats Work's history, what they have accomplished in the past, and more importantly, what opportunities are coming up. One such opportunity is the Delegate Day of Service on Wednesday, Aug. 27th. This is being headed up jointly by future first lady, Michelle Obama, and first lady of Colorado, Jeanne Ritter.

Bad argument: Michelle as vengeful castrating wife

Fri Aug 08, 2008 at 02:52:27 PM PDT

Can we please let this image go?

Everything we've read and heard about the Obama courtship, marriage and family life leads us to believe they have a healthy loving relationship.  That should be good enough for us.  We don't have to turn Michelle into a knife wielding Glenn Close, in order to explain why Barack would never cheat on her.

First, it's insulting to Michelle's intelligence.  When I say intelligence, I'm not referring to her Princeton and Harvard degrees.  I'm talking about a common sense that exudes from her wherever and whenever she speaks.  Seriously, go watch this speech she gave at the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Council, recently.  Does she sound like a mistrusting wife of a philanderer or a confident spouse in a healthy relationship?

Second, it's faintly racist.  A bad, bad stereotype exists that african-american women cannot trust their african-american boyfriends and husbands.

Let it go, folks!

Update: From the early comments I gather the context of this is not clear.  Go read some of the recent diaries and comments in the Edwards diaries.  People are putting forth faulty arguments why Obama won't cheat.

Edwards: From a purely cynical perspective...

Fri Aug 08, 2008 at 02:00:04 PM PDT

maybe this and the Olympics will suck up all the oxygen so that Obama will be able to vacation without losing a lot of ground.  Also, maybe this will help him with women voters.  He's already getting most of them, but maybe there are some holdout Hillary supporters (and even some Republican women) who will be reminded of McCain's adulterous history, esp. with Miss Buffalo Chip.  Some may even remember their irritation at Bill Clinton for his pecadillos.

Michelle Obama - Ebony cover

Fri Aug 08, 2008 at 12:16:09 PM PDT

The Washington Post Reports:
Michelle Obama Covergirl

Next week's Ebony magazine features an 11-page spread about Mrs. Obama that includes interviews with her mother, brother and several close friends.

"I love to look glamorous when there's a wonderful, purposeful event that is appropriate. But when I'm in Iowa campaigning with the girls, I am in Gap shorts and a T-shirt," Mrs. Obama says of her fashion sense. "My first job in all honesty is going to continue to be mom-in-chief," she later says of her family commitments. "We accessorize each other in many ways," she says of her marriage to the senator.

"She wanted to open the doors and let America see who she is. She invited Ebony into her inner circle," says the magazine's creative director Harriette Cole, who compiled more than 500 pages of notes for her report. The magazine has covered the senator's rise since before he ran for the Illinois state Senate, Cole said.

Michelle Obama should reach out to Cindy re. Sturgis

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 09:11:38 PM PDT

By now you've all heard about John McCain pimping out his wife at the Sturgis Bike Rally.  It's a little frustrating that it's not getting more (any?) play in the traditional media.  So I think the Obama camp should help it along.

Thing is, how to bring it up without getting down in the muck oneself?  I think the perfect person to push this out there would be Michelle Obama.  How she might artfully do it after the break.

Obama Joins Nelly for "Tip Drill" Performance

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 05:28:34 PM PDT

Last night Barack Obama joined Hip Hop star Nelly in a performance of Tip Drill before 50,000 screaming fans at "Ho-Fest 2008" at Detroit's Ford Field.

The high point of the night was when Obama invited his wife Michelle onstage and re-enacted the famous Tip Drill video.  The crowd went crazy as Michelle and Barack performed the hilarious credit card move.

The performance was immediately condemned by:

NBC, ABC, CBS the NY Times, the Washington Post, MSNBC, CNN, FOX, Lifetime, Oxygen, Emily's List, NOW, NARAL, PUMA, the Family Research Council,  the White Citizens Council, Focus on the Family, Family Circus, Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the United League of Purity Balls.

Letter to Michelle on childbirth issues

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 01:28:50 PM PDT

(I'm sharing what I submitted on the Obama website.)

Michelle, as a mother of two, I'm sure you'd say your births were very significant events in your life. Unfortunately for many US women, birth is traumatic and terrifying because of a health care system that does not honor women.

Who played the race card first?

Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 09:29:43 AM PDT

It's funny how quickly that the media seems to have forgotten that the GOP and its allies were the first ones to play the race card now that McCain (their favorite candidate) has cried foul. Well since I'm not a card carrying member of the McCain media I will list the many instances in which the Obamas were attacked for their race.

  1. Obama hates his mom's race email smears: An email smear has been going around that falsely claims that Obama nurses a "pervasive sense of grievance and animosity towards whites." It is obvious that this email has been forwarded around by Republicans to get white people to be scared of his race.

Michelle makes Vanity Fair best-dressed list

Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 05:14:07 AM PDT

Okay - so this is not a political diary.  Or dealing with the heavy issues of the day.  But our gal Michelle has won the style wars against Cindy McCain.  So all I can say is "You go girl!"  Our sistah has style - and doesn't have to be a multi-millionairess to do it either.

Ode to Michelle O: My Blackness goes before me.

Wed Jul 30, 2008 at 07:37:29 AM PDT

I have been thinking alot about how Michelle is treated and by extension how her treatment has affected us as black women.

The way she is being disrespected really thrusts a dagger deep into the heart of us women of color who feel our blackness going before us wherever we go.  The same can be said for other dark skinned minorities and for black men too.   But the treatment of Michelle O has really struck a nerve with us as black women.

Where are all those feminists who so ardently defended Hillary?  Why have they not called out those who treat Mrs. O in such a deplorable manner as sexist?  So far I have only seen strong defenses coming from sisters.

So here is an Ode to Michelle to let her know some of us understand.

Slow death by strangulation, part 11

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 12:15:35 PM PDT

A couple of weeks ago, as part of my series of stories on the economic stress of college debt, I wondered if readers knew about the college loan status of our elected leaders. This weekend, I poked around on the internet and found one blogger who has written a little bit about Barack and Michelle Obama's college loans. But while I didn't find any real information on John or Cindy McCain's college situations (including the college arrangements of their children), I did find a number of strange and disconcerting items about McCain's college affordability proposals (and lack thereof).

Links to the earlier parts of my series are at the end of today's note.

"The Closer" is back on the trail!

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 10:05:05 AM PDT

Today Michelle Obama is going to be attending a luncheon where she'll be discussing Barack Obama's plan for Working Women and Working Families. This makes me very excited for a few reasons:
